In 1926, after the establishment of Vilkaviškis diocese, it was decided to open the priest seminary. The construction of a new seminary was started under the care of the Bishop A. Karosas. 60 clerics from the temporarily established seminary in Gižai moved to the newly built seminary premises in Vilkaviškis in 1930. In 1944, with the beginning of the second Soviet occupation, the activity of the seminary was stopped. As the front approached, some of the clerics left for Germany and continued their education at the Eichstaett Priest Seminary, others stayed in Lithuania and moved to the Kaunas Seminary. In 1955, the sewing factory "Žemkalnija" was established in the former seminary building, which is still operating today and is one of the largest companies in Vilkaviškis district. The palace was designed by the architect V. Landsbergis-Žemkalnis.
