In the 17th century, with the help of K. Z. Pacas, the Dominicans settled in Virbalis, who in 1643 built a monastery with a church. Until 1783, under the leadership of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania‘s architect monk L. Grincevičius, a new brick church in baroque style was built on the side of the square. After the decrease in the number of monks in 1819 the monastery was closed, the church was given to the parish. It is mentioned that at that time the church was still without the left tower. About 1903, under the care of the dean K. Siaurusaitis, the church was enlarged by adding side chapels, and when the churchyard was extended to the side of the square, the fence of the old monastery was demolished and the main stairs of the church protruded into the square. In 1944, the retreating German army blew up the church. In 1958, the former hospital was converted into a church and named after St. Michael the Archangel.
