Vištytis lake is one of the most famous and cleanest lakes in Suvalkija. The lake occupies an area of 1,820 ha, of which Lithuania owns only 386 ha. The deepest point of the lake in the western part reaches 54 m. Vištytis lake attracts vacationers with its wooded shores, diverse vegetation, fresh air and peace, and legends about its origin. According to one of them, the lake came from the "Blue Lagoon", others say that it descended from the clouds or floated out of the earth. How it really was there, no one knows, but the air hummed and cheeped all night. When people got up in the morning, they saw that the meadows were covered with water. When the water was still restless and cheeping, the little girl said, "But here the water cheeps like a chicken (Lith. Vištytis)!" So she suddenly guessed its name and the water immediately stopped rising.
