The Nemunas’ loops are a unique phenomenon shrouded in mystery. The question of what made Nemunas looped like that remains unanswered to this day. It is agreed that the Great Nemunas Loops were formed after the last ice age, when huge ice masses retreated. Geologists associate the origin of the Great Nemunas loops with the movement of the earth's crust. Bends in large rivers often cluster and are associated with the rise or fall of the area, a fault in the depths of the earth or the intersection of several faults. The Nemunas loops are located exactly in such an area, where two large faults extend in the deep layers of the earth.
